As a human author that has been mostly benefitting from Artificial Intelligence, Science and Technology as a result of my long 35+ year career working in tech industries I also want to acknowledge that specific individuals and communities are not benefitting from AI, AI-Generation, Science and Technology.

I’m also in various categories of isms that are known as marginalized and underrepresented. As a result of my own life experiences and work, I look at ways to assist with ensuring inclusivity and empowerment for individuals and communities that are very different from myself.

I asked Chat-GPT to share ten ways AI-Generation can be a tool for inclusion and empowerment. The following list is how I understand it’s response and it does appear hopeful in regards to making AI inclusive, equitable and beneficial for all. I still have concerns of course, but this is a start and can help with future work, education, training and defining new “no-harm” policies that AI engineers and tech workers can practice.

  1. Diverse Dataset Collection: Verify datasets used to train AI models are diverse, respectful and represent a wide range of people and communities — including those historically marginalized to prevent harmful biases in AI-Generated content.
  2. Inclusive Design Principles: Use inclusive design principles to create AI systems and interfaces that are accessible to people with different abilities and different levels of technological literacy.
  3. Bias Mitigation Algorithms: Develop and use algorithms that detect and mitigate biases in AI-Generated content regarding gender, age, race, culture, religion, etc.
  4. Ethical Guidelines: Create and practice clear ethical guidelines for AI-Generation that emphasize fairness, transparency and accountability in the development and deployment of AI models.
  5. Community Involvement: Engage marginalized communities in the AI development process, seek their input, feedback and involvement to verify AI technologies meet their needs and respect their values.
  6. Education & Training: Provide affordable and accessible training programs in AI-related fields to underrepresented groups, empower them to participate in and benefit from AI-Generation industries.
  7. Affordable Access: Bridge the digital divide and promote inclusion with AI-Generation tools that are also affordable and accessible to marginalized communities.
  8. Cultural Sensitivity: Create AI models and datasets that are respectful and understanding of cultural nuances, languages and traditions of various communities. Avoid cultural insensitivity.
  9. Regulatory Oversight: Advocate for and implement regulations and policies that prevent discriminatory AI practices. Ensure AI-Generation benefits all members of society and does not harm marginalized groups.
  10. Representation in AI Development: Promote diversity within AI development teams to bring different perspectives and experiences to the table, which can lead to more inclusive AI solutions.

I plan to write new articles hyper focused on each list item with the hope it will help more people to bring their best to each of the many industries that are impacted and intertwine with AI-Generation tools.
